INFSA-2025:19906: mingw-libtiff security update

Information about definition

Identificator: INFSA-2025:19906

Type: security

Release date: 2025-11-07 21:28:39 UTC

Information about package

The libtiff package contains a library of functions for manipulating TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) image format files. TIFF is a widely used file format for bitmapped images. TIFF files usually end in the .tif extension and they are often quite large. The libtiff package should be installed if you need to manipulate TIFF format image files.

Vulnerabilities description

  • CVE-2025-9900

A flaw was found in Libtiff. This vulnerability is a "write-what-where" condition, triggered when the library processes a specially crafted TIFF image file. By providing an abnormally large image height value in the file's metadata, an attacker can trick the library into writing attacker-controlled color data to an arbitrary memory location. This memory corruption can be exploited to cause a denial of service (application crash) or to achieve arbitrary code execution with the permissions of the user.

  • CVE-2025-8176

LibTIFF could allow a local authenticated attacker to execute arbitrary code on the system, caused by an use-after-free in function get_histogram of the file tools/tiffmedian.c.
